Vibe Check ft. Lowcountry Street Grocery
Team SightseeShare
Welcome back to Sightsee's Vibe Check, where we deliver our community's latest recommendations on what to read, watch, listen to, and do!
This month, we're venturing outside of our Sightsee fam for Vibe Check — meet Lindsay and Olivia, founders of Lowcountry Street Grocery! These folks have been putting in the work this past decade to create a more resilient and equitable local food system, something they call a “Robin Hood economy.” Recently, they started the SNAP Back campaign to help cover the cost of getting fresh, healthy food into the hands of SNAP-eligible families in the Lowcountry, now and in the future. This quarter, 1% of all of Sightsee's profits will be going straight to this campaign, and we couldn't be more excited to contribute so that Lindsay and Olivia can continue to do the incredible work that our community relies on.
Read on to discover some new faves from this dynamic duo, and respond to this email with yours — we always love hearing from you! And as always, we encourage you to donate to LSG directly if you are able, and spread the word!
Lindsay & Olivia's Picks:
- Reading: We're revolting against technology in our own small way. Everything we're recommending is analog media, and that's really half the point. Daily, we're all over Civil Eats (please peep & support!) Weekly, we read the Post & Courier (yes, the smelly, nostalgic, tactile newspaper) & re-use it at work as liners on Nellbus. Monthly, we look at National Geographic & The Atlantic. Our bedside tables are also stacked with books. Right now, Olivia is getting through Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee, and Lindsey is reading Mailman, a pre-release non-fiction narrative detailing a rural Appalachian mail route in southwest Virginia. It's incredible!
- Eating: ALLLLL the citrus. It's citrus time! We have over 12 varieties in-house from Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. Also very high on Hakurei and Scarlet Queen turnips right now. Typically pan-fried and bopping in an extremely allium heavy twice-reduced brother. For drinks, we're really really digging Sherry, Labatt Blues, and classic martinis from 1920s era bartender books.
- Listening: Remember that whole analog thing? We're biiiig into tangible tunes. We have a 1964 tube amplifier and 1968(ish) Rectilinear 3-way speakers, and we've been cycling through a few records that we're keeping at the top of our stack: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Junior Kimbrough, Nippon Columbia Label, Mac DeMarco's 2, Fugees, and Nirvana Unplugged.
- Watching: It was just Thanksgiving, so ahem, duh. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. We're suckers for feel-good 80s and 90s nostalgia, and we watch this annually with family. On the tube, we're watching football. LOTS of football. Namely, Buffalo Bills football, Hey-ey-ey-ey (IYKYK)! If not that, then Ken Burns' American Revolution, anything Criterion Collection, or one of Lindsey's favorite campy B movies.
- What are you loving from Sightsee lately? I must say, the coffee shop classics. Not an easy out either: we think Sightsee aces the fundamentals. Lindsey's order is a macchiato, and oftentimes a pour-over. Olivia is really into the ceremonial-grade matcha. That being said, we're always open to suggestions. We like to let the creators create and the experts expert!
